TURNER-BRANDON POST 7

Commander:

As we say good-bye to 2017, I hope you all have a healthy, safe, and prosperous 2018.

Most of you may know that the American Legion, is a U.S. wartime veteran’s organization formed in Paris, on March 15, 1919, by three officers of the American Expeditionary Forces. (Founders: Theodore Roosevelt Jr., Franklin D'Olier, and Eric Fisher Wood)

The American Legion was chartered by the U.S. Congress on September 16, 1919 and our motto is “For God and Country”

We will continue Post 7 through 2018 and I expect that Post 7 will celebrate “The American Legion's 100 Years” on Friday March 15th, 2019 in our hall. The American Legion will start its Centennial Celebration starting in September, so be on the lookout for various Department of Florida, Central Area, District 16 and Post 7 events!

  • If we support our functions, events, and the lounge, the Post will prosper.
  • If a few members can donate time to bingo, or support a pool or bowling tournaments.
  • If you get involved with membership. Do you have a friend who can join? If so, please ask them to sign them up.
  • Don't listen to RUMORS and don't start them. If you want to really know what is going on at the Post, come to the General Membership Meetings.

Be an Ambassador for our Post. Tell individuals you hear talking negatively that this is a new year and the Post 7 Officers are working hard to make our Post better for all members.

Always remember that nothing can be settled in the Lounge (there are rules against talking Post Business there, anyway). Want to be heard? Go to meetings and get involved.

Some changes for 2018:

1. Members and their guests using our Lounge will not be charged an entertainment fee unless a hall rental forces us to move the entertainment from the hall to the lounge. Hall Rental revenue must take priority. The only other time will be if we have a special event. (IE. Super Bowl Party, 4th of July, etc.)

2. Regular Saturday Dances will always be in the Hall and have a cover charge for guests. No fee for paid up card carrying members of Post 7. (however, Members may be charge for special events in Hall.)

3. Credit cards will be accepted in the lounge for payment of dues and bar tab on or around February 1st.

4. We are considering having a Karaoke machine available on Friday nights for those who might want to sing and or free entertainment.

5. General Membership Meeting will change to 4th Thursday of the month. Executive Committee meetings will stay at 2nd Thursday and the American Legion Auxiliary’s Unit 7 will stay at 3rd Thursday. The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 7’s meetings will be the Commander' Call.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS BY HARRY COBLE (FIRST VICE)

I want to thank those of you who have renewed their membership for 2018.  Our renewal rate is just a little over seventy (70) present and that is behind the renewal rate we had for 2017 at this time.  Legionaries should be aware that if they still have their 2017 card on January 1, 2018, and they come to the post they will not be able to participate in any activities until their 2018 dues are paid.  Auxiliary members have until June 30th, 2018, to renew their membership.  Members may now pay their dues on-line, by check, by cash, and by credit card.  I am usually in the office on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1-4 pm but please call first (727) 442-5293 and select office, just in case I have something that will keep me from coming in to the office the day that you want to come and renew your membership.

If you are here when the Membership Chair or Commander is not, then you can leave your dues with one of the bartenders.  You may give the bartenders your credit card and they will charge the dues to your credit card. A big question for each of you is do you carry an American Legion Membership Application with you always?  If not, why not?  You never know when you may have the opportunity to encourage someone to join the Legion but if you don't have a membership application with you than the probability of that person joining goes down very quickly.  Individuals who would like to transfer or join Post 7 would need to come in with their DD Form 214 (Record of Discharge) and see the Commander or Membership Chair.

Post 7 has one Life Line Screening Certificate available to the highest bidder.

The value of this certificate is $149, and it covers five screenings that scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries which is the leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke. The cost of these tests are very reasonable compared to what someone would have to pay at the doctor’s office or hospital.

The certificate is good until April 23rd, 2018 so bids will be accepted until April 1st, 2018.

Please call Harry Coble at 727-442-5293 and press office and either talk to him or leave your information on the answering machine along with your name and telephone number.  Thanks.

Finance Officer

We spend more then we brought in during the last five months. A portion of the money was spent for repairs cause by the lighting strike not covered by insurance. To cover these losses, we are drawing down the Money Market and Bingo accounts. We must reverse this trend by working together, volunteering to help our post to plan and execute fundraising events. If you have any questions, please attend the next membership meeting and I will be available for interview by any member who wishes it.

Happy New Year! As we move into the new year, we are all looking forward to the continued growth and activity at our home post. Saturday afternoon Got It Game has been growing each week, we’ve seen a lot of new faces as well as some of our old friends coming back. Sunday is always a packed house, football on the TV’s, Euchre on one side and pool tournaments on the other. That is how our home post should be, everyone is welcome, no matter their interest.

Along with the Legion and SAL, we are always trying to come up with ideas to interest you, our members. We have a dart game and are looking to start a dart tournament. We are starting a bowling league; the signup sheet is on the bowling machine if you are interested. The plan is to start the 10-week league mid-January.

As your president, I want to hear from you. What would interest you? What would encourage you to come to our meetings? We have a wonderful home post and we want to keep it that way, but we can’t do it without your help. Please do not hesitate to call me at 727-543-0752, or email me at randy.karen1007@gmail.com.

Our meetings are the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7pm. Please join us.
